Pet Insurance Buying Guide
What to consider when choosing a pet insurance plan?
How It Works
Once you have your custom Spot Pet insurance policy and have paid your premium, you can carry on as usual. When your pet needs unexpected care after any applicable waiting periods, you can visit any vet in the U.S. or Canada, submit a claim in minutes via our easy-to-use app and get paid back up to 90% of your covered vet bill. Most claims are processed in less than 2 days.
Coverage
Spot offers two main plans: Accident & Illness coverage, addressing a broad range of health concerns, and the Accident Only plan, catering specifically to unexpected injuries. Spot also offers optional preventive care plans as an add-on with coverage available for routine exams, dental cleanings, and spaying or neutering.
Deductibles
Spot plans incorporate a deductible, a predetermined amount that must be paid before coverage applies to eligible veterinary expenses. As a policyholder you retain the ability to select the deductible amount, tailoring the plan to align with your preferences and financial considerations.
Reimbursement
Spot plans offer reimbursement rates of 70%, 80%, or 90% on eligible vet bills. You’ll need to meet your deductible first before reimbursements are paid out. Allowing you to choose the reimbursement amount gives you the added flexibility to customize your plan to best fit your pet's health needs and your budget.
Pre-existing conditions
Our plans don't cover pre-existing conditions, and typically, neither do most others. However, unlike some other pet insurance providers, Spot plans can cover curable, pre-existing conditions, as long as they are symptom free for at least 180 days, excluding pre-existing knee and ligament conditions.
Premiums
In general, your premium is based on your pet’s age, your pet’s breed, and where your pet lives. Some other factors that may impact your premium are: the plan you choose, your deductible, your reimbursement percentage, if you have included preventative care coverage or not, and the discounts for which you may be eligible for.
Age limits
Plans provided by Spot don’t have an upper age limit for new enrollments or coverage. We advise all pet parents to insure their pets at a young age. You can enroll your pet in a plan from Spot as soon as they’re 8 weeks old. Don’t let your pet develop a “pre-existing condition” before they’re insured.
What's Not Covered
Spot plans do not cover breeding costs, elective cosmetic procedures like talk docking or ear cropping, or preventive care services. You can add preventive care coverage for wellness exams, vaccines, and more for a small fee after you select your base plan.
